Speaking of jetfoils, our HOTT Crew was in Gloucester yesterday as civic and business leaders unveiled an exciting new marine-related expansion into the tourism economy:

Jetfoil service from Gloucester to Provincetown begins Summer 2015! Gloucester's New Acting Mayor announced two major seasonal destinations will be served from Gloucester by New England's fastest ocean-going commuter craft, the Boeing 929 JetFoil.
Opening on-season Cape-to-Cape service (Cape Ann to Cape Cod) will expand marine business opportunities in Gloucester and dramatically reduce travel times from the North Shore, New Hampshire and Maine to Cape Cod's premier destination, Provincetown. And off-season jetfoils will provide commuter service to Boston's Long Wharf.

Two Boeing 929 JetFoils, acquired from Japan, travel at cruising speeds of 52MPH and will provide dock-to-dock Gloucester to Provincetown service in just 60 mins (45 mins less than Boston to Provincetown)! Gloucester to Boston service during off-season will be an amazing 30 minutes (over 30 minutes faster than commuter rail).

Gloucester civic leaders explained that the cod fishing ban has rendered harborside wharves empty, resulting in the opportunity to convert them into covered parking spaces for Cape-to-Cape JetFoil passengers, who will then board the JetFoil at St Peter's Square next to Cape Ann Brewery. Tally's Citgo across from St. Peters Square is being sold to Cape-to-Cape JetFoil and will be used for a new headquarters building and visitors welcome center.

Gloucester's New Acting Mayor described high-end commuter service to the Cape and Boston that will include:

  • Onboard gourmet catering from Beach Gourmet of Gloucester and Kung Fu Dumplings of Provincetown (including high-end wines and beers from Savour of Gloucester).
  • Indoor bike parking on the JetFoil for 50 bikes (additional bike space available atop the JetFoil).
  • Spacious airline style and club seating for 250 passengers.
  • Free high-speed WiFi.
  • Onboard Concierge service.

The New Acting Mayor expressed optimism that the Fort area of Gloucester would finally be able to pull it's own weight economically and contribute to the area economy. And special excitement was stated about establishing a reliable winter-time alternative to Commuter Rail for local residents to get to work in Boston. Additionally, word is that Toys of Eros Boutique will be among the first of Provincetown businesses to open a new locations in Gloucester on Main Street due to the additional visitor traffic.

All in all it's a promising rebirth of Gloucester's maritime tradition and a beacon of new investment and business opportunities on Cape Ann!

And last, but not least, check out our film recommendation for the day at the Boston LGBT Film Fest. We highly recommend Tab Hunter Confidential at 3:30pm!
